Moresheth-gath

Moresheth-gath (meaning possession of the wine-press) was a town in the Shephelah (lowland) of Judah, probably situated near or as a suburb of the Philistine city of Gath. It is notable as the birthplace and home of the prophet Micah (Mic. 1:1, 14), who is therefore called the Morasthite (Jer. 26:18). Micah's oracle in 1:14 uses the name of the town in a wordplay lamenting the impending Assyrian invasion. Jeremiah's contemporaries cited Micah of Moresheth's prophecy against Jerusalem (Jer. 26:18–19) as a precedent for prophesying judgment without suffering death, which helped spare Jeremiah when he delivered a similar oracle. The site is commonly identified with Tell el-Judeideh, approximately twenty miles southwest of Jerusalem in the foothills between the coastal plain and the Judean highlands.
