Mushi
Name meaning: "he that touches, that withdraws or takes away"
Mushi was the second of two sons of Merari, son of Levi (Ex. 6:19; Num. 3:20), making him a grandson of Levi and a great-grandson of Jacob. Together with his brother Mahli, he was the ancestor of the Mushite clan of Levites (Num. 3:33; 26:58). The Merarite division of the Levites, to which the Mushites belonged, was responsible in the wilderness for transporting the heavy structural components of the tabernacle — the frames, bars, pillars, and bases (Num. 4:29–33). Under the monarchic period, the descendants of Mushi continued in Levitical temple service. His name (withdrawn or he who touches) may relate to the Levites' role in handling sacred furniture. In Chronicles the Mushite genealogy is extended through several generations, confirming the clan's ongoing importance in the post-Davidic Levitical organization (1 Chr. 6:47; 23:23; 24:30).
