Naboth

Naboth the Jezreelite was the owner of a vineyard adjoining the royal palace in Jezreel, which Ahab coveted for a vegetable garden (1 Kgs. 21:1–2). Naboth refused to sell or exchange it, citing the Mosaic law that forbade the permanent alienation of ancestral land (Lev. 25:23): "The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee" (1 Kgs. 21:3). Jezebel arranged his judicial murder by suborning false witnesses who accused him of blaspheming God and king, and had him stoned. Elijah confronted Ahab in Naboth's vineyard and pronounced doom on Ahab's dynasty (1 Kgs. 21:17–24). The fulfillment of this prophecy — Jehu's execution of Joram and the casting of his body into Naboth's field (2 Kgs. 9:25–26) — became a landmark example of divine justice vindicated.
