Nahum

Nahum (meaning consolation; comforter) was a Hebrew prophet designated as an Elkoshite — a resident of Elkosh, a place whose location is disputed but possibly in Galilee or Judah (Nah. 1:1). Nothing is known of him beyond what is revealed in his prophecy. He prophesied the fall of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, which he describes in vivid detail. The prophecy is generally dated between 663 B.C. (the fall of Thebes, which Nahum mentions as a past event in 3:8) and 612 B.C. (the actual fall of Nineveh). His message provides the counter-balance to Jonah: where Jonah recorded Nineveh's temporary repentance and sparing, Nahum announces its ultimate and permanent destruction.
