Naked

Naked and nakedness in Scripture carry several distinct meanings. (1.) The original state of innocence in the garden, where Adam and Eve "were both naked and not ashamed" (Gen. 2:25) — a condition of perfect transparency before God and each other. (2.) The shame that followed sin, when they recognized their nakedness and covered themselves (Gen. 3:7), establishing modesty and clothing as consequences of the fall. (3.) Prophetic sign-act: Isaiah walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign of Assyrian captivity (Isa. 20:3). (4.) Theological vulnerability: Job's declaration "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return" (Job 1:21) expresses absolute dependence on God.
