Naomi

Naomi (meaning my delight; pleasant), wife of Elimelech of Bethlehem-Judah, accompanied her husband and two sons to Moab during a famine. In Moab her husband and both sons died, leaving her with her two Moabite daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth. Naomi resolved to return to Bethlehem and urged her daughters-in-law to return to their own families. Orpah departed, but Ruth clung to Naomi with the famous declaration of loyal love: "Where you go I will go" (Ruth 1:16). On returning to Bethlehem Naomi requested to be called Mara ("bitter"), saying "the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me" (Ruth 1:20). The book of Ruth traces how God's providence through Ruth's marriage to Boaz restored Naomi to fullness — she became nurse to Ruth and Boaz's son Obed, grandfather of David (Ruth 4:16–17).
