Narcissus
Person Name
Name meaning: "astonishment; stupidity"
Narcissus is mentioned by Paul in Romans 16:11 in the greeting "Greet those in the Lord who belong to the family of Narcissus." He appears to have been a notable Roman householder whose household included Christian slaves or freedmen. Some scholars have identified him with the influential freedman Tiberius Claudius Narcissus, secretary to the Emperor Claudius, whose household slaves would have passed to the imperial household after his death. Paul's phrasing suggests Narcissus himself may not have been a believer, but that members of his household were.
