Neapolis

Neapolis (meaning new city) was the seaport of Philippi in Thrace (Macedonia), the first European town where Paul set foot during his second missionary journey (Acts 16:11). It lay on the Via Egnatia, the great Roman road linking Asia Minor with Rome, about 10 miles southeast of Philippi. Paul sailed from Troas to Neapolis in response to the Macedonian vision (Acts 16:9–11), a crossing that brought the gospel to Europe for the first time. He passed through it again at the end of the third missionary journey (Acts 20:6). The site is identified with modern Kavala in northeastern Greece.
