Nebat
Person Name
Name meaning: "that beholds"
Nebat was the father of Jeroboam I, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He is identified as "an Ephrathite of Zereda" (1 Kgs. 11:26), though little else is recorded of him personally. His name appears almost exclusively in the formulaic phrase "Jeroboam the son of Nebat" (appearing some 20 times in Kings and Chronicles), used in evaluative summaries of subsequent kings who "walked in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat" — primarily the idolatrous calf worship at Bethel and Dan.
