Nebo

Nebo is the name of several places and one Babylonian deity. (1.) A mountain in Moab in the Abarim range, from whose summit Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death (Deut. 34:1; 32:49). It overlooks the northern end of the Dead Sea and the Jordan valley, and is identified with Jebel en-Neba. (2.) A town in the territory of Reuben east of the Jordan, mentioned in Numbers 32:38 and 1 Chronicles 5:8. (3.) A town in Judah whose people returned from exile (Ezra 2:29; Neh. 7:33). (4.) Nebo was also the name of the chief Babylonian deity of writing and wisdom, son of Bel-Marduk, mentioned in Isaiah 46:1 as falling prostrate before the advancing Medes — a taunt against the impotence of Babylon's gods.
