Nehiloth

Concept

Nehiloth is a musical term in the title of Psalm 5 ("upon Nehiloth"), generally interpreted as referring to wind instruments — specifically flutes or pipes (from the root halal, to bore or pierce). Some scholars have proposed that it designates a wind instrument that was to accompany the psalm's performance, while others read it as a tune name. The LXX renders it as referring to "inheritances," suggesting a different reading tradition. The exact meaning and the instrument intended remain uncertain.
