Nemesius of Emesa

Nemesius, bishop of Emesa in Syria (late fourth century), was a Christian philosopher whose treatise On the Nature of Man blends biblical anthropology with Greek philosophy and influenced later theology in both East and West.

Nemesius's On the Nature of Man is one of the earliest Christian works of systematic anthropology, weaving biblical teaching on the human person together with Greek medicine and philosophy. Read and excerpted in both East and West, it influenced later reflection on body and soul, free will, and providence, and was at times circulated under the name of Gregory of Nyssa.
