Nereus

Person Name

Name meaning: "same as Ner"

Nereus was a Roman Christian greeted by Paul at the close of Romans (Rom. 16:15), along with his sister and Olympas and those with them. His name was common in the Roman world, being that of a sea-god in Greek mythology. Some scholars have identified him with a Nereus mentioned in the Acts of Nereus and Achilleus, an apocryphal text, who is said to have been a member of the household of Flavia Domitilla. If so, he had connections to the Roman aristocracy. Beyond this greeting nothing is known of him.
