Nergal

Nergal was the Assyrian and Babylonian god of war, pestilence, and the underworld, associated with the planet Mars and regarded as a god of destruction and death. He is mentioned in 2 Kings 17:30 as one of the foreign deities worshipped by the Cuthean settlers whom Sargon II resettled in Samaria after the deportation of the northern tribes: "the men of Cuth made Nergal." His cult center was at Cutha (modern Tell Ibrahim northeast of Babylon), and he is frequently invoked in Assyrian royal inscriptions and curses. His name appears in the compound name Nergal-Sharezer (Jer. 39:3, 13).
