Nethaniah

Nethaniah (meaning the gift of the LORD) is the name of several individuals in the Old Testament. The most historically significant was the father of Ishmael, the Judahite captain who assassinated Gedaliah, the governor appointed over Judah by Nebuchadnezzar after the fall of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 40:14–41:10). This act of violence destroyed the fragile Judean community that had remained in the land. Another Nethaniah was a son of Asaph, one of the Levitical musicians appointed by David for the temple worship service (1 Chronicles 25:2, 12). A third was a Levite sent by Jehoshaphat to teach the law throughout Judah's cities (2 Chronicles 17:8).
