Niger

Person Name

Name meaning: "black"

Niger (Latin meaning black) was the surname of Simeon, one of the prophets and teachers at the church in Antioch of Syria (Acts 13:1). The Latin name Niger suggests he may have been of African origin or dark complexion, possibly connecting him with the North African church. He was among the church leaders who were praying and fasting when the Holy Spirit called Barnabas and Saul (Paul) to their first missionary journey (Acts 13:2–3). Beyond this single reference, nothing else is known of Simeon Niger.
