No (also called No-Amon or No-Ammon, meaning the city of Amon) was the great Egyptian city of Thebes, located about 400 miles south of Cairo on both banks of the Nile in Upper Egypt. It was one of Egypt's most magnificent capitals and the center of the worship of Amon-Ra, the supreme god of the Egyptian pantheon. Nahum 3:8 invokes the fall of No-Amon as a historical warning to Nineveh: "Art thou better than populous No?" — pointing to the Assyrian conquest of Thebes in 663 B.C. by Ashurbanipal as a precedent for Nineveh's own impending doom. Jeremiah and Ezekiel both include No among the Egyptian cities that will face God's judgment (Jeremiah 46:25; Ezekiel 30:14–16).
