Noph

Noph (also Moph; identified with Memphis) was the Hebrew name for the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, located on the western bank of the Nile near the apex of the Delta. It appears in several prophetic oracles: Isaiah 19:13 mentions the princes of Noph among those who led Egypt astray; Jeremiah 2:16 rebukes Israel for seeking alliance with Egypt, connecting Noph and Tahapanes; and Ezekiel 30:13, 16 pronounces judgment on Noph and its idols. Hosea 9:6 predicts that Noph shall bury those who flee Assyrian judgment. The consistent appearance of Noph in prophecies against Egypt reflects its status as a major center of Egyptian power and paganism. See also Memphis.
