Nophah

Nophah (meaning fearful or binding) appears in a fragment of an ancient victory poem cited in Numbers 21:30 among the Moabite cities devastated by Sihon the Amorite: "We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba." The poem is quoted to establish that Israel's capture of this territory from Sihon was legitimate — they were not taking Moabite land but land that Sihon himself had taken from Moab. Nophah's precise location is unknown.
