Old gate

The Old Gate (also called the Jeshanah Gate in some translations) was one of the gates of Jerusalem repaired during Nehemiah's rebuilding of the city walls (Nehemiah 3:6). It was repaired by Jehoiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. The gate likely stood in the northern wall of the city. Its name (sha'ar hayyeshanah, the gate of the old city or the ancient gate) suggests it was associated with an older section of Jerusalem — possibly dating to the pre-exilic period. In Nehemiah 12:39 it is named among the stations in the great procession celebrating the wall's dedication.
