Omer

The omer was a unit of dry measure in ancient Israel, equal to one-tenth of an ephah (Exodus 16:36) — approximately 2.3 liters or just over 2 quarts. It appears primarily in the context of the manna in the wilderness: each person was to gather one omer per day (Exodus 16:16), and a double omer on the sixth day for the sabbath. A jar containing an omer of manna was preserved in the ark of the covenant as a perpetual memorial of God's provision (Exodus 16:33). The omer should be distinguished from the Omer of post-biblical Jewish practice — the seven-week count from Passover to Pentecost.
