Oreb

Oreb (meaning a raven) was one of two Midianite princes killed by the Ephraimites during the rout of the Midianite army after Gideon's night attack. Judges 7:24–25 records that Gideon sent messengers to Ephraim to intercept the retreating Midianites at the fords of the Jordan; the Ephraimites captured Oreb and Zeeb (meaning wolf) and killed them — Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. Their heads were brought to Gideon beyond the Jordan. The names suggest a poetic pairing: raven and wolf as emblems of predatory raiding.

The defeat of Oreb and Zeeb became a paradigm of divine deliverance in Israelite memory, invoked in Psalm 83:11 and in Isaiah 10:26, where God's coming judgment on Assyria is compared to his striking down of the Midianites at the rock of Oreb.
