Osprey

The osprey (Hebrew ozniyyah, from the root oz, strong) appears in the lists of unclean birds in Leviticus 11:13 and Deuteronomy 14:12. The exact species is uncertain; proposed identifications include the osprey (Pandion haliaetus), the black vulture, the short-toed eagle, or the bearded vulture (lammergeier). All these large raptors were apparently prohibited as food along with other birds of prey. The osprey, which feeds almost exclusively on fish caught in spectacular plunge-dives, would have been a familiar sight over the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan valley in antiquity.
