Ossifrage

Concept

The ossifrage (from Latin ossifragus, bone-breaker) appears in the lists of unclean birds in Leviticus 11:13 and Deuteronomy 14:12 (KJV). The Hebrew peres most likely refers to the bearded vulture or lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus), a magnificent raptor of the mountains that drops bones from great heights to smash them on rocks below and then feeds on the marrow. This remarkable feeding behavior is the basis for both the Hebrew name and the Latin translation. Modern translations render peres as vulture or ossifrage.
