Ouches

Ouches is an archaic English word appearing in the KJV for the gold settings or sockets (mishbetzot in Hebrew) in which the onyx stones of the high priest's ephod were mounted (Exodus 28:11, 13–14; 39:6, 13, 16, 18). The word derives from Old French nouche (brooch, clasp) and refers to the ornate gold filigree or twisted wire settings that held precious stones in ancient Near Eastern jewelry. Each of the two onyx stones on the high priest's shoulders was set in such a golden mounting. Modern translations render the term as settings, sockets, or filigree.
