Palm Tree

The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), designated by the Hebrew tamar, was among the most characteristic and valued trees of ancient Palestine. It thrives in hot, dry climates, grows to considerable height, and bears abundant fruit for decades. The palm was associated with Jericho, called the city of palm trees (Deuteronomy 34:3), and its abundance throughout the land symbolized the prosperity and blessing of the covenant people.

In Scripture the palm carries rich symbolic weight. Psalm 92:12 uses it as a metaphor for the flourishing of the righteous: The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. Palm branches were strewn before Jesus at his triumphal entry into Jerusalem (John 12:13), recalling the festival of Tabernacles, and in Revelation 7:9 the redeemed multitude stands before the throne holding palm branches, symbols of victory and eternal joy.
