Paran, Mount

Mount Paran refers to the elevated highland wilderness region associated with the wilderness of Paran in the northern Sinai–southern Negev area. It appears in two theophanic passages: Deuteronomy 33:2, where Moses's final blessing declares that the Lord shined forth from Mount Paran alongside his appearance from Sinai and Seir, and Habakkuk 3:3, where the prophet's vision of divine judgment describes God coming from Teman with his glory covering the heavens, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.

In both texts, Mount Paran functions as a poetic landmark of divine self-disclosure, evoking the era of the exodus and wilderness theophany when God marched with his people through the southern wilderness. Its precise geographical identification remains uncertain, but it is associated with the rugged highland terrain of the central Sinai massif or its northeastern extensions toward Edom.
