Pedahzur

Pedahzur (meaning: the rock redeems or rock of redemption) was the father of Gamaliel, the prince appointed over the tribe of Manasseh for the first census in the wilderness (Numbers 1:10; 2:20). He appears in the repeated formulas of Numbers 1–10, where each tribal leader is identified by name and patronym in the various administrative lists of the wilderness community.

Pedahzur himself held no listed office; he is known entirely through his son Gamaliel, who represented Manasseh in the census, led the tribe's contingent in the marching order (Numbers 2:20), and brought Manasseh's dedication offering at the consecration of the tabernacle (Numbers 7:54). The name Pedahzur, built on the divine epithet rock (tsur), reflects the theological conviction expressed throughout the Psalms that God is the refuge and redeemer of his people.
