Pelaiah

Pelaiah (meaning: distinguished of the Lord or the Lord does wonders) is the name of two individuals in the post-exilic period. The first was a descendant of David through Jeconiah (Jehoiachin), listed in the royal genealogy preserved in 1 Chronicles 3:24 — evidence that the Davidic line continued to be tracked after the end of the monarchy and through the Babylonian exile.

The second Pelaiah was a Levite who assisted Ezra in the great public reading of the Torah (Nehemiah 8:7), one of the thirteen Levites who helped the congregation understand the law as it was read. He also appears among those who sealed the covenant renewal document under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:10). Both figures represent the religious leadership of the restoration community, committed to preserving and transmitting the covenant traditions through the crisis of exile and return.
