Peres

Concept

Peres is the singular form of the Aramaic word parsin meaning "divided" or "broken," appearing in Daniel 5:28 as part of the mysterious handwriting on the wall at Belshazzar's feast: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PERES (UPHARSIN). Daniel interpreted it as "Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians" — a wordplay on the Aramaic root meaning both "divided" and the name "Persia." The prophecy was fulfilled that very night when Belshazzar was slain and Darius the Mede received the kingdom.
