Pergamos

Pergamos (or Pergamum, meaning: height; elevation) was a major city in the Roman province of Asia in western Asia Minor (modern Bergama, Turkey), the capital of the Attalid kingdom before becoming a leading Roman provincial center. It possessed the second largest library in the ancient world (second only to Alexandria), a famous altar of Zeus, temples to Rome and Augustus, and the shrine of Asclepius the healing god. The letter to Pergamos in Revelation 2:12–17 commends the church for holding fast to Christ's name even "where Satan's throne is" — a reference perhaps to the imperial cult or the great altar of Zeus — while rebuking those who hold the teaching of Balaam and the Nicolaitans.
