Persecution

Persecution — the active hostile opposition of authorities or communities toward believers because of their faith — is a consistent theme in both Testaments. The prophets were persecuted by kings and priests; Jesus was killed by the Jewish and Roman authorities; and the early church experienced systematic opposition from both Jewish leadership and the Roman imperial system. Jesus explicitly promised his disciples that they would face persecution and called those who endure it blessed, promising the kingdom of heaven as their reward.

Paul catalogues his own sufferings as evidence of authentic apostolic ministry and teaches that "all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." The New Testament authors consistently frame persecution as participation in Christ's own suffering and a mark of genuine discipleship rather than evidence of divine disfavor.
