Phanuel

Person Name

Name meaning: "face or vision of God"

Phanuel (meaning: face or vision of God) was the father of the prophetess Anna who encountered the infant Jesus in the temple at the presentation. He is of the tribe of Asher — one of the northern tribes that had largely disappeared after the Assyrian conquest — and his mention is one of the few clear New Testament references to someone from one of the "lost tribes" maintaining an identity in Jewish life. Anna, his widowed daughter of great age, gave thanks to God and spoke of the child Jesus to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
