Pharez

Person Name

Name meaning: "division; rupture"

Pharez (the older English form of Perez, meaning: division; rupture) was the son of Judah and Tamar, born in unusual circumstances when Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute after her rights under the levirate law were denied. His twin Zerah put out his hand first but Pharez broke through, giving him the birth-name "breach." Pharez became the ancestor of the royal Judahite line through Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, and Salmon — the lineage that runs through Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David to Jesus in Matthew's genealogy.
