Phicol

Person

Phicol was the commander of the army of Abimelech, king of the Philistines at Gerar. He appears twice in the patriarchal narratives: first accompanying Abimelech when the king made a covenant with Abraham at Beersheba following the dispute over the well, and again when a later Abimelech (or the same king at a later time) made a similar covenant with Isaac at the same location. His presence at both covenantal negotiations suggests he was a senior military officer whose witness guaranteed the treaty's binding force.
