Phinehas

Phinehas (meaning: bold aspect; face of trust or protection) was the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron, whose act of zealous violence against Zimri and Cozbi during Israel's Baal-Peor apostasy turned away God's plague, resulting in the divine covenant of a perpetual priesthood for his line. Psalm 106:30 commemorates this act as "counted to him as righteousness for all generations." He later led the delegation that investigated the altar built by the eastern tribes and averted civil war by his discerning response.

A second Phinehas was the wicked son of the priest Eli who, with his brother Hophni, treated the offerings with contempt and slept with the women serving at the tabernacle. He was killed in battle on the day the ark was captured by the Philistines — the news causing Eli to fall and die and Phinehas's wife to name their son Ichabod ("the glory has departed").
