Piety

Piety in the New Testament sense encompasses both reverence toward God and fulfillment of familial and social duties flowing from that reverence. The Greek eusebeia (godliness, reverence, piety) appears throughout the Pastoral Epistles as a key virtue of the Christian life — training in godliness is of value for all things, holding promise for the present life and the life to come. In 1 Timothy 5:4 piety specifically denotes the duty of children and grandchildren to support their widowed relatives — translated "show piety at home" — reflecting the connection between devotion to God and duty to family that the biblical concept consistently maintains. Paul warns in 2 Timothy 3:5 of those who have a form of godliness but deny its power.
