Pine Tree

The pine tree of the Authorized Version translates several Hebrew words whose precise botanical identification remains disputed. In Isaiah 41:19 and 60:13 the KJV reads "pine tree" for the Hebrew tidhar, which some modern versions render as "pine," "elm," or "plane tree." Nehemiah 8:15 also includes a tree rendered "pine" in some versions in the list of branches to be used for building booths at the Feast of Tabernacles. The Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) does grow in Lebanon and the highlands of Carmel and Galilee, making the identification plausible for the Lebanese and northern contexts, though certainty remains elusive.
