Pison

Place Name

Name meaning: "changing; extension of the mouth"

Pison (meaning: changing; extension of the mouth) was one of the four rivers said in Genesis 2:11–12 to flow from the headwaters of the Garden of Eden, described as flowing "around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold." The identification of the Pison with any known modern river is uncertain: proposals have included the Indus, the Ganges, the Nile, a Persian Gulf river system, and rivers of Arabia. The difficulty is compounded by the parallel identification of the Gihon with a river that flows around Cush, since none of the standard identifications produce a geographically coherent map of all four rivers from a single source.
