Plain of Mamre

The Plain of Mamre (more accurately in the Revised Version "the oaks" or "terebinths of Mamre") was the grove of trees at Hebron where Abraham pitched his tent after separating from Lot (Gen. 13:18) and received the divine visitors who announced the birth of Isaac and the judgment on Sodom (Gen. 18:1). The location "Mamre" — named after an Amorite confederate of Abraham (Gen. 14:13) — became associated with Abraham's most intimate encounters with God. The cave of Machpelah, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah, and Jacob were buried, adjoined this location (Gen. 23:17–19; 49:30). See also MAMRE and HEBRON.
