Poor

The poor (Hebrew 'ani, dal, 'ebyon; Greek ptochos) receive extensive protection under Mosaic law and consistent advocacy from the prophets. The law provided for gleaning rights in fields and vineyards (Lev. 19:9–10; Deut. 24:19–21), year-of-jubilee land restoration, interest-free loans to the poor (Ex. 22:25; Lev. 25:35–37), and the sabbatical year release of debts (Deut. 15:1–11). The prophets condemned those who oppressed the poor as violators of the covenant (Amos 2:6; 4:1; Isa. 3:14–15). Proverbs teaches that kindness to the poor is lending to the LORD (Prov. 19:17). Jesus declared "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (Matt. 5:3) and announced his mission as good news to the poor (Luke 4:18; Isa. 61:1), while James warns that the rich who oppress the poor will face judgment (Jas. 2:5–7; 5:1–6).
