Post

Post in Scripture denotes a runner or courier responsible for the rapid transmission of royal letters and decrees. Hezekiah sent posts throughout Israel and Judah with letters calling the people to the Passover at Jerusalem (2 Chr. 30:6). Ahasuerus sent posts on swift horses to deliver Haman's decree of destruction throughout the Persian empire (Esth. 3:13–15) and later sent posts with the counter-decree of Esther and Mordecai (Esth. 8:10–14). The Persian royal postal system, the angareia, was among the most efficient communication systems of the ancient world, using relays of horsemen at regular intervals. Job compares the swiftness of his days to the runners: "My days are swifter than a post" (Job 9:25).
