Potipherah

Potipherah (also Poti-pherah) was a priest of On (Heliopolis, the center of Egyptian sun worship), whose daughter Asenath was given to Joseph as his wife by Pharaoh when he elevated Joseph to be his second-in-command (Gen. 41:45). Asenath bore Joseph two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who became the heads of two of the twelve tribes of Israel (Gen. 41:50–52; 46:20). The name is the Egyptian Pa-di-pa-Re ("he whom Ra gave"), cognate with Potiphar. The marriage to an Egyptian priest's daughter fitted Joseph's elevation to the Egyptian court and was characteristic of how foreign-born officials were integrated into Egyptian society.
