Pound

Pound in Scripture translates two different measures. (1.) Hebrew maneh, a weight equal to 50 (or sometimes 100) shekels, used for gold and silver (1 Kgs. 10:17; Ezra 2:69; Neh. 7:71–72). (2.) Greek litra, the Roman pound of about 12 ounces (327 grams), used in John 12:3 for the pound of costly spikenard Mary used to anoint Jesus, and in John 19:39 for the 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes Nicodemus brought for the burial. (3.) Greek mna (mina), a monetary unit used in the Parable of the Pounds (Luke 19:11–27), where a nobleman gives ten servants ten minas to trade with while he goes to receive a kingdom — a parable of faithful stewardship until Christ's return.
