Prince

Prince translates several Hebrew and Greek words of differing weight. Hebrew sar (commander, chief) applies to military leaders and court officials (Gen. 12:15; Num. 31:48). Hebrew nasi' (exalted one, lifted up) designates the heads of tribes and the prince of a tribe or people (Num. 1:16; Ezek. 34:24). The messianic title "Prince of Peace" (sar-shalom) in Isaiah 9:6 combines governance with the concept of wholeness and well-being. In the New Testament, Satan is called "the prince of this world" (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) and "the prince of the power of the air" (Eph. 2:2), while Jesus is "the Prince of life" (Acts 3:15) and "Prince of princes" (Dan. 8:25).
