Ptolemais

Ptolemais was the Hellenistic and Roman name for the ancient Canaanite city of Acco (Acre), situated on the Bay of Haifa on the northern Carmel coast (Judg. 1:31; Acts 21:7). It received the name Ptolemais when the Ptolemies of Egypt controlled the region. Paul stopped there for one day during his final journey to Jerusalem, greeting the Christian community (Acts 21:7). The city's natural harbor made it a significant port throughout antiquity, and it later became the Crusader capital known as Saint Jean d'Acre. The modern city of Akko (Acre) in Israel preserves the site.
