Puah

Puah (meaning splendid) is the name of two individuals. (1.) One of the two Hebrew midwives — the other being Shiphrah — who feared God and refused Pharaoh's command to kill Hebrew male infants at birth (Ex. 1:15–21). The midwives told Pharaoh that the Hebrew women gave birth before the midwives could arrive. God rewarded their faithfulness by giving them families of their own. Their act of civil disobedience in obedience to a higher law is a celebrated example of conscience overriding state authority. (2.) A man from the tribe of Issachar, father of Tola who judged Israel for twenty-three years (Judg. 10:1).
