Pul

Pul (1.) An Assyrian king who invaded Israel during the reign of Menahem (c. 745–738 B.C.), receiving a tribute of 1,000 talents of silver in exchange for supporting Menahem's reign (2 Kgs. 15:19–20). He is now identified with Tiglath-pileser III, the most powerful Assyrian king of that era: Pul was apparently his Babylonian throne name and Tiglath-pileser his Assyrian one. 1 Chronicles 5:26 distinguishes the two names but refers to the same king. (2.) A place or people listed among the distant nations in the eschatological vision of Isaiah 66:19, alongside Tarshish, Put, Lud, and Tubal — representing the far reaches of the known world.
