Put

Person

Put (also Phut) was one of the four sons of Ham in the table of nations (Gen. 10:6), along with Cush, Mizraim, and Canaan. Put is generally identified with Libya (North Africa west of Egypt), though ancient sources also locate "Put" along the Somali coast. Put's mercenary soldiers served alongside Egypt in its battles (Jer. 46:9; Ezek. 30:5), and they appear in Tyre's trading networks (Ezek. 27:10). In the Gog and Magog prophecy, Put is listed among the allied nations that will come against Israel (Ezek. 38:5). The identification with Libya is supported by Persian inscriptions and the Septuagint's rendering of the name in several passages.
