Pygarg

The pygarg (Hebrew dishon, "springing" or "leaping") appears in Deuteronomy 14:5 in the list of clean animals permitted for food, alongside the hart, gazelle, roebuck, and others. The Authorized Version's rendering "pygarg" comes from the Greek pugargos (white-rump), which ancient writers applied to various antelopes. Most modern versions render it "ibex" or "antelope." The most likely identification is the Addax antelope (Addax nasomaculatus), a large, pale-colored antelope with gently twisted horns once found in the deserts bordering Canaan.
